doing this assignment is kind of a review on identity in artwork since we went over this lesson last year. I do remember it was one of my favorite lessons, because as a teenager I am always trying to figure myself out.
last year I recall that I did an acrylic painting trying to capture who I thought I was with symbolism. my favorite way to depict myself is with symbolism, so this year I ended up following that theme.
my middle name is Rose and my favorite flower is a rose, so I often identify myself as Rose. roses are kind of my thing, whether I want them to be or not. I thought my best way to go about this project would just to hit close to home and create who I KNOW I am. I am Rose.
since my identity is still quite a mystery to me, this project is a bit of a self discovery of who I am today. i first tried to do a portrait drawing, but I just felt like it only captured what I look like and not who I am. then I tried doing an abstract drawing sort of capturing who I thought I was, but I ended ruining it really bad on accident so I abandoned that idea.
my third idea was to make a sculpture since one of my classmates was willing to teach me how to weld and work with metal, so I decided on making a metal sculpture.
after learning how to weld and work with metal, I went straight to work on creating my metal rose. I first cut out 3 4 inch by 4 inch sheets of tin, then I cut them into a petal shapes. I added a little bit of texture the the petals to make them look more flower like. then a friend of mine helped me bend and shape a piece of metal so I could create the stem. after making the stem look how I wanted it to, I welded the petals and the stem together to secure them together. after that, I took out a blow torch and heated up the petals do I could mold and shape them to my desired shape. finally, I wrapped a piece of wire around where the petals meet the stem to hide the welding marks.
this may sound like it was quick and easy, but this project took me about two days and I even got injured in the process. nothing too major though, I still have all of my fingers and everything.
I am EXTREMELY happy with how this rose turned out. I am also glad I had a good teacher to show me the ropes on how to create this.
